Kelly was expected to inform his team of the decision Thursday night at Cincinnati’s football banquet. Notre Dame is preparing for the news conference, going as far as asking athletic department employees not to wear jeans on would normally have been a casual Friday because of exam week.

An announcement in South Bend could come as early 8:30 tonight.

Kelly replaces Charlie Weis, who was dismissed last Monday after a rocky tenure that included two Bowl Championship Series appearances and the most losses in a single season in Notre Dame history.

Kelly will be without the star quarterback Jimmy Clausen and the dynamic receiver Golden Tate, both of whom declared for the N.F.L. draft this week.
